Wheel Nipples
spoke tightening sequence?
I am new to cycling. I have some vintage bike wheels I am using for a project.
they are true, but some spokes seem a little loose. I`m not trying to rebuild these wheels, just "freshen them up on a budget".
do you just snug the loose ones?
or do you give all the spokes a equal amount of turns at the nipple?
do you tighten them at opposite sides of the wheel like you would tighten car lug nuts, or can you go around from one to the next?
what size is the teeny wrench you use on the spoke nipples?

This is going to sound weird to those of us who know how to build and true wheels, but for the purposes of your question I'll suggest to you that there is no "sequence" to follow. If you have loose spokes, just snug them up but don't put any real tension on them until you understand what you are doing. Truing a wheel is simple, but it's deceptively complex.
Spokes on a wheel are seldom all at even tension, and (especially on a used wheel) if you go around tightening them trying to achieve that you will almost certainly take it out of true and/or develop flat spots in the radial dimension. The proper way to do it is to use a "truing stand" or something rigged up to work like that where the wheel is fixed solidly and able to spin freely....with an adjustable indicator that rides close to the rim surfaces so that you can see what each turning of the nipples has done. You have to think three-dimensional when doing it as well. .....deceptively complex.

You want to use a spoke wrench instead of a crescent or whatever. The spoke nipples are soft and damage easily....spoke wrenches fit them properly and on at least 3 sides to prevent rounding them off. If you use another tool you may damage them (easily and cheaply replaced, but still...). It's also hard to turn other tools because there isn't a whole lot of room to work. You can get quality individual spoke wrenches for about $4, or cheaper multi-fit ones for just a couple bucks. Walmart used to sell those cheapies, even....not sure if they still do.
I'd suggest that you take the wheels into a shop and have them look them over.....if they feel that they need to be trued, ask if you can watch. Most shops are pretty cool about that and you'll get to see a little of how it works. Like I said, it isn't hard, but it sure will help you to watch and learn from someone in person before you screw up your own wheels and have to take them into a shop anyway. Once you learn the ropes, hunt around for some cheapie or trash wheels that you can practice on....many shops have at least a few lying around that they may let you borrow or pull from the recycle bin (warranty wheel/hub replacements, etc). Just ask.
