Universal Gravitation Homework Questions?
My teacher gave us review question for an upcoming test, and I thought I understood but I guess I don't. I don't understand how to do the following questions.
1)The intensity of light from a central source varies inversely as the square of the distance. If you lived on a planet only half as far from the sun as our earth, how would the light intensity compare with that on earth? How about a planet ten times as far away as the earth?
2)Calculate the force of gravity between the earth (mass = 6x10^24 kg) and the sun (mass = 2x10^30 kg, distance = 1.5x 10^11 m).
3)To better comprehend the magnitude of the gravitational force between the earth and the sun, pretend gravity is turned off and the pull replaced by the tension in a steel cable joining them. How thick would such a cable need to be? You can estimate the diameter by knowing the tensile strength of steel cable is about 4.5x10^8 N/m^2 (each square meter cross section can support a 4.5x10^8 newton force).
All these ?s are readily answered using only the gravity equation: F = G*M1*M2/r²

Steel beam or new joists?
Hi
I want to strengthen a floor and my options are to use new joists or insert a steel universal beam. My current joists are c16 and ive done the calculations and I would need to use C27 timber. (75x225) Span 3820
If I stick to my current joists C16 47x225 I was thinking of getting a structural engineer to calculate a steel beam for me to break the span from 3820 to 1910.
What are the advantages of using the universal beam rather than the new joists? I was thinking of the environmental factors of not using more wood... New joists look like a messier job... can you think of anymore please?
I know I need to have building control consent I am just wanting to think about the adv and disav of which option I want to choose!!!
If the joist currently in place are sound and a beam will solve the strength issue by all means install a beam. Removing current joist or even adding new ones can be a bear of a job. Electrical and plumbing runs also need to be considered when you tackle this project. Most of the time a beam will be easier to install once you've determined the size of your new beam. Good luck

I would believe a man who has seen and experienced things with his own eyes rather than one willing to hate what he cannot see.
Wish those facts applied more nowadays.
