how does Mary Shelley manipulate the readers respone to victor and the creature??
I am not a lazy sh*t lol I genuinely am stumped with this essay and it is due in soon, I've been staying after school to get notes and such but I don't know what to write.. =[
There are far too many possibilities to give a full and exhaustive answer to this question, but I do have a few ideas to get you thinking.
Consider the format of the novel; the various narratives coiled within each other are ultimately presented through Walton's letters. It is safe to infer then that the language and style used by him are fairly consistent, and helps to level distictions between characters. Look how the Monster is portrayed as being eloquent and intelligent, in a way that is not too disimilar fashion to Frankenstein himself. The structuring of the narrative helps to blur the lines of distinction between the "scientist" and the "monster".
Try and come up with a list of all the times that VIctor shirks his reponsibility towards his creation, and the times where people are unsympathetic and seek to hurt the monster. It has been often remarked that Mary Shelley was using her book to ask who the real monster was - Victor or his creation. However, I see it as asking who ISN'T a monster... there are very few individuals in the whole novel that we could make a case for displaying humanity.
To what extent does the monster's self-awareness of his hideousness make us sympathetic towards him?
Think about the first words that the monster learns to speak, and how their irony influences our sympathies towards him.
If it is the 1831 edition that you have studied, consider Mary Shelley's introduction to the novel: 'I bid my hideous progeny go forth and prosper'.... do you think she is talking about the monster, or about the book itself and the effect it had on society?
The whole time that Frankenstein is pursuing the monster, he tells Walton that he was gifted signs and refreshments by "spirits" that he had invoked. We all know that it was actually the monster that was leaving these things behind - what does that tell us about him?
The book is subtitled "The Modern Prometheus". The Promethean myth teaches the danger of stealing the fire of knowledge and bringing it to people that are not ready for it. But in the myth, it is Prometheus that is blamed for his actions, not the flame or knowledge itself. Victor Frankenstein is the parallel for Prometheus, and the Monster is the flame; from the very title of the play, Shelley is manipulating how we should judge the two characters.
These are just a few ideas that I hope will get you thinking about the question. Best of luck with the essay.

How far is it from Ingolstadt to Geneva?
I teach high school English and my 11th graders and I are working on Frankenstein. We are trying to figure out how long it would take the average person to walk from Ingolstadt (where Victor Frankenstein created his monster) to Geneva (where Frankenstein's family resides). But we need to know how far it is! Thanks!

And we are talking walking, not driving (Frankenstein's monster walks--we assume--from Ingolstadt to Geneva over the course of two years. We are trying to figure out how long it would actually take; we already know it is far less than two years. Although, it may, presumably, have taken the monster this long as he laid waste to land and people along the way.)
Distance is 655 km and time to reach will be 6hrs 23 minutes.
