Saddle Vintage Information on hanging english leathers on in reverse?
Can anyone explain how to hang English leathers on with the buckle down by the stirrup rather than under the jockey? I have heard that this used to be done before recessed stirrup bars to minimize bulk under the riders leg. I have a vintage saddle that I would like to do this on, but can't figure it out. Any one know how this was done? Thanks in advace for any insight!
Thanks to all who answered so far. What do you do with the excess stirrup leather when you are done so that is doesn't flap around.? Thanks again!
I know exactly what you are referring to.
I have seen it done on field trail saddles, plantation saddles and some South American style saddles.
Rather than try to explain it in words, I have a link that I think you will find very informative.
Information on WYETH saddles, the Pony Express and vintage saddles in general?
What constitutes a "Vintage" saddle?
I was in a local tack store yesterday and saw a vintage Wyeth western saddle for $750. The saddle was old, but in good shape, nice leather with a quilted paddled seat. The sales person said that they were highly collectible because Wyeth made saddles for the Pony Express.
This leads me to ask:
Does anyone have any information on Wyeth saddles?
Is it true that Wyeth made saddles for the Pony Express?
What is the big deal with Vintage saddles anyway?
Thanks to anyone who can share some info.
there are a lot of collectible saddles out there and Wyeth are one of those.Wyeth saddles started making saddles in the early 1800s and did make the saddles called"mochilas"for the pony express eastern divisions, they were made in ST Joseph MO and stamped their saddles with"WYETH H&M CO.,ST JOSEPH,MO".a quilted and padded seat means that it is a 1920s to 1940s saddle.all of my saddles are vintage saddles and yes i still ride them and rope off them.i also own a wyeth saddle from the 1920s and my newest saddle is from the 1960s,they are great saddles and very comfortable to ride, the only thing is they are slick seat saddles so balance is key and an iron butt helps also.vintage saddles are like vintage cars and to collectors they have charactor that new saddles wont have for a long time,if they last that long.the leather was better, the trees were better and stronger and they used real high quality rawhide for the tree wrapping.saddle strings, castrator horns and widowmaker swells, gotta love em..
