Racing Grips What are the benefits of slick tires?
Do slick tires give you more grip and are they good for tight turns and racing or drift? Also where can I buy slicks?
There are a number of benefits - each of with gains these benefits by compromising some other element.
Racing tires that feature a non-grooved surface (or a minimally grooved surface in the case of DOT tires) have more surface area, and thus more grip. Additionally, they have more rigid construction that can handle greater lateral loading as well as provide quicker response on turn-in. They have less tread on the tire and thus they are have less tread squirm when at full tread - again giving quicker repsonse (althought the, in the case of many bias ply tires, the opposite is true and while they produce greater overall grip, they require a great deal of preloading for turn-in and a very different driving style). And lastly, and most importantly, they use very different compounds than found in typical touring tires.
These plusses come with the negitives that, lacking any grooves or tread pattern, they are only usable on dry pavement (even dry but dirty pavement can be an issue). They are harsher riding and provide little comfort and will be quite noisey compared with normal passenger tires. The compounds will not last long (I've personally worn out a set of soft tires in less than 50 miles, and anything approcahing 1000 miles would be very long lived); however, longevity of the tread is often a lesser issue as the compounds used loose effectiveness with each "heat cycle," with the tire becoming less grippy (and in some cases, unpredictable and near dangerous) as they are used.
The tires are at their best when they are up to temperature (this usually takes about 1-2 laps). While they are good for tight turns, a slow, tight turn is not the most effective use - a fast sweeping turn will make much better use of them Iin the first case, the car may sustain 25mph compared to 22mph for a good street tire... the later it would sustain 100mph compared to 80mph). They also allow for better acceleration and braking since they provide more grip before traction is lost.
They are not well suited to drifting since the goal here is not speed as much as losing traction (and these tires help you go faster, and have more traction).
Slicks can be purchased from any racing supply shop, or directly from the tire manufacturers. These tires are not street legal.
R-Compound tires that are DOT legal, and thus usable on the street (by meeting the minimal tread pattern requirement of two grooves). However, while legal for street use, they are not practical to use on the street due to the previously mentioned issues (though they are allowable in classes where other race tires may not). Tirerack.com carries a good selection of these tires, as well as many of the less aggressive R-Comps with full tread patterns (drivable on the street, but still not advisable due to issues with heat cycling).

Horse Racing Handicapping Tip Number 1 for Understanding Jockey Changes
When there is a jockey change in horse racing, it can be hard to know whether it will have a positive or negative effect on the horse's performance. The problem is that you, as the handicapper, don't have the inside information on the horse. For instance, maybe this particular jockey, even though he or she has a low percentage, is actually the rider who has been exercising the horse in the morning and has gotten a good grip on the animal and they are well suited to each other.
That can be just one of the reasons a particular jockey is on a horse. Another reason may be that the rider who had been up in the irons in the past has a better mount and is abandoning it. See if the former rider is on another horse and ask yourself why he or she chose that one to ride. Once again, the reason may not be obvious and it may take inside information to understand it.
Though you may not have the inside information on what is happening, if you pay attention and have kept good notes about your local trainers, you may be able to figure things out, or at least make a good guess, which is 90% of horseracing handicapping. For instance, if you know that a certain jockey is the go to rider for that trainer and that jockey is getting on a horse, it is a pretty good bet that the animal is going to put in a good race.
Now here is something that can produce good bets and make you some money. There are some trainers who win with low percentage jockeys but lose with high profile jockeys. Some of these trainers are even high profile trainers. I learned that lesson the hard way. Upon seeing that a top jockey was getting on a top trainer's horse, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and bet it. So did a lot of other people and maybe we were supposed to. The horse turned in what appeared to be a lackluster performance and lost.
However, the very next race, when the top jockey had gotten off the horse, it won at higher odds than it had in its previous race. I started following that trainer and found that the jockey who'd posted the win, though seemingly less of a rider than the high profile jockey who'd lost, was regularly winning for that trainer. The odds were always attractive, too, because at first glance, it appeared the horse was going to lose and the jockey switch to a low percentage jockey confirmed it.
The moral of this story is that you have to know who the trainer's go to jockeys are and don't use win percentages of the jockeys to determine whether a switch to another rider is a good one or a bad one. It is better to know who that trainer wins with and use that to determine if the horse is a good bet.
