Pros and Cons of NCL Freestyle Cruising?
I am going on my second cruise but first with NCL in April. We are going on the Norwegian Jewel out of New York. What have been your experiences?
I have cruised NCL about 8 times, both before or after they started Freestyle cruising. Before freestyle I loved NCL and didn't even look to book on any other cruise line. After freestyle started I had several problems which lead me to just stop doing NCL cruises.
The people who like to be able to go to dinner any time they want seem to love it. But these days all of the cruise lines have the same thing, go to dinner when you like. The problems that I have had with it is getting a different wait staff for dinner each evening and not knowing them and them not knowing what I like. The service seems to drop off with freestyle because you rarely get the same wait staff twice and so there's no incentive for them to give good service. Your tips for the wait staff go into a pool and not directly to them. Then I have had a couple occasions when I went to dinner with freestyle and had to wait 10 to 20 minutes for a table. On one cruise they actually gave us a buzzer so they could call us when a table was ready. That's just not what I want on a cruise. The freestyle dinner was not as bad on port days when people were getting back to the ship at various times of the afternoon. But on at sea days everyone wanted to go to dinner early so there were lines.
Then on formal night, which NCL calls, "dress up if you want to night", only about 25% of the people dressed formal. So why have a formal night if most people don't dress formal. We felt kinda out of place dressed formal and people were coming in with casual clothes on.
The cruise was OK, last couple anyway, but I don't particularly care for NCL ships either. WE cruised last on the Gem which I think is about the same as the Jewel. I didn't like the fact that there were areas of the ship reserved for people in suites only, like a big section of the main show room.
So you'll have a good time and if you like the freestyle stuff you'll be just fine.

Most televised rap battles have rules regarding profanity and misogny, though most untelevised battles or those shown online like Jump Off TV's freestyle rap tournament offer no constraints, allowing the rappers to be dirtier than a Richard Pryor comedy skit.

Freestyle rap also plays a vital role on radio. The nationally syndicated Wake Up Show featuring Sway and King Tech is a cornertone of rap culture and often invites well known emcees to spit freestyles on their show. They've included such notables as KRS One, Eminem, Atmosphere, Tech N9ne and Xzibit, and allowed all of them to demonstrate their freestyle prowess.
Freestyles also help writers feel out a song. Rather than combatting writer's block, many MCs will simply freestyle with a beat to feel out its mood, while testing out different rhyme patterns and tempos to see which fits the best. It is said that Jay-Z doesn't write his rhymes at all, but rather freestyles them in the booth before put together into a cohesive song. This is a grey area and raises an interesting question: If he's freestyling parts of song, then putting together, is he really freestyling? Or just writing out loud?
MCs who freestyle rap- be it over mixtapes or the neighborhood- are in a lot of ways the guardians of hip hop. They're the ones who are living the culture truly in the moment (much like B-boys and B-girls), as low to the ground as possible. While some rappers may go platinum and start resting on their laurels, the freestyle rappers are out there sharpening their skills every day.
