Nishiki Bikes

i just acquired a Nishiki Sport Cro-Mo 18 spd bike, how do i find out year it was made&rim&tire size to use?
Last things first.
Chances are that your bike has 27" wheels. Check the tire, it should say on the sidewall.
Being that the bike is 18 speed (I am assuming 3 gears in the front and 6 in the back), jou need to locate the serial number. The first number is the last number of the year. Based on it being a Nishiki Sport and made of CrMo my guess it is from the 80s... I'd need to know how it is equipped before being sure.

Well, if you are replacing your components with more modern ones I would suggest going for the Shimano (being the largest component manufacturer in the world means they are very easy to acquire). It is hard to tell you which one is actually better, because you don't list the actual model of each, Sun Tour and Shimano both had high and low-end components and a high-end sun tour could be light-years beyond a low-end shimano (and vice versa).
As for your other question, the Skylark was just an entry level shimano component, nothing too fancy, but because they are shimano they are probably of a higher quality than most low-end components.
