Lite Handlebar
I'm thinking of building a bike from used and some new parts. What should I know before I start?
I want a 10-Speed with narrow street tires and bullhorn handlebars. I don't compete in races or anything. I just like to ride for fun, transportation and exercise. I don't need anything real fancy, super lite or high tech.
What sort of frames should I look for and which should I avoid?
Where are some good places to look for the new and used parts I'll need?
How much should I expect this project to cost & would it be cheaper to buy something new?
Can you suggest any parts or extras I could use?
I don't expect you to answer all of these questions. I'm just looking for some advice before I get started.
First piece of advice is you are going to spend a lot more money doing this from parts. A used bike would be abetter starting point. Let me give you a few examples. Bike frames come in different sizes and you probably know that already so you will need to find a size that is good for your height. The frame and fork will need to be purchased together so the fork and frame bearings match properly. And the crank will likely need to be purchased at the same time because of unique threads and types of cranks and bearings. The back axles of the bike vary so you will need to be sure you buy a rear wheel that has the same spacing as the rear of the frame. Also the front wheel will need to match the type of ends on the forks that you bought with the frame. There are currently about a zillion seat post sizes so you will need to be sure you get the right size post for your frame. Then you move into the brakes. The brakes on bikes coming in different reaches from the center bolt to where the brake shoes touch the rim. You will have to get the right ones or the brakes shoes will rub on the tire and not the rim or they will reach too far and hit the spokes. And I forgot to mention that bike frames have differnt mounts for the brakes and you might use a countersunk allen or a nut mounting system.
Actually the whole bike has these dependencies and many more. If you go used and have several bikes you are using as parts donors you may find you still can't assemble a safe functioning bike because the parts are incompatible.
If you get yourself a good used bike you have a whole lot better chance of success and getting something you don't spend a fortune on. Then you can afford to get a cyclometer and other accessories to make your riding more fun.
