Given an oil droplet with a mass of 8.85 × 10−7 kg and a density of 923 kg/m3 that spreads out to form a circle with a radius of 43.2 cm on the water surface, what is the approximate diameter of an oil molecule?

Ooh, I like this oil question!
1. Okay, assume the oil will maintain the same density as it spreads out. If it has the same density and the same mass (which it has to, since we aren't adding oil to it), then the volume of the drop must stay the same. What's happening is that the oil drop is changing shape until it is a flat laminate--an oil slick. The volume of a flat laminate with uniform thickness is just the cross sectional area (in this case, it's a circle, so you can use simple geometry to figure it out) times the thickness. So, since we know the density, mass, and radius (from which we can get area), we just solve for thickness.
2. Don't forget that the sound has to travel to the reflecting object and back. So, the distance used in the calculation is twice the distance from the tugboat to the reflecting object.
3. Do you know linear algebra? I would solve this with matrices. Should be a pretty simple problem. Otherwise, multiply the top equation by 7/6 and add it to the second equation and see what comes out.

Radiant Heat With Zmesh
