Lightning Number

Do the seconds between thunder and lightning really tell how far away it is?
Someone once told me when I was young to count the seconds between when lightning hits and when the thunder sounds. And the number of seconds between them was how many miles away it was. I'm not sure if this is true or was made up to make me feel better. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
Yes. Light moves at a pretty close to constant rate. (It's constant through space, through the atmosphere, it's close enough. Either way, its so fast you can consider it instant). Sound also moves at close to a constant rate.
Since Light is so fast, you can consider the time you see the lightning the time when it strikes. Then by counting the seconds, you can tell how long it took the sound to reach you. Since it's pretty much a constant speed, if you divide by the speed, you'll get the distance.
The speed of sound is 340 meters per second, so for every second it takes between the lightning and the thunder, the lightning is another 340 meters away. Roughly 5 seconds gets you a mile.

Max Crumm - Grease Lightning - 2007 Grease Revival
After watching Lebron beat Kobe and Wade over the course of a week is seven the magic number for number 23?
year 7 was the year Jordan got a title ... Will lightning strike twice?
Are you guys paying attention? You should be. Bron' is upping his steroid intake by at least 10 percent this year and he can actually hit lay-ups.
well, they definitely have a shot at it and the cavs are playing great. KG's probably gonna be injured in the playoffs again so they can beat the celtics and orlando's struggling without hedo. I guess this is the year that we'll see whether he is really clutch or not.

A more realistic comparison would be, “number of people struck by lightning” and “number of people went into anaphylactic shock after eating something they were allergic to.” One of them is an instantaneous fatal event; the other would be fatal within minutes or hours, if you don't receive treatment. To put it another way, there is no epipen that you can self-medicate with after an electrocution incident…
