KHE Freecoaster Problem: Won't Catch?
I have a KHE Reverse Freecoaster. Its RHD but i don't know how old it is. Bearings still work great, Everything is in place, but when i rollback and try to pedal foward, it takes like, 20 revolutions to frickin catch. ive been working on this hub for 5+ hours and i still can't figure out the problem.
set up: Cone washer/ dust cover/ Bearing/ 2 thin spacers/ top hat spacer/ clutch/ driver
btw, there is quite a bit of grease BUT ive tried this with and w/o alot of grease and same problem.
can anyone help me out? i cant afford a new hug (neither Cassette nor freecoaster)
First, get rid of the grease. Freewheels and cassette bodies don't perform well with heavy lubes.
Here's what to do:
1) Completely clean the grease out without removing anything. You can use any spray degreaser or even WD40. Spin the cog while continuously spraying the degreaser into the mechanism. You'll eventually (in about 5 minutes) hear a different sound... probably a smoother, louder clicking.
2) Using a thin lube such as TriFlow... don't use teflon based, paraffin based, or dry lubes... start spinning the cog again and dripping the lube into the mechanism until it starts coming out the other side. If you used WD40 to clean you can do this right away. If you used degreaser then you must wait until it's dry.
3) While performing step 2, occasionally try to engage the mechanism by trying to turn it the other way to see if it'll catch. It will, eventually, unless the mechanism is worn out in which case replacement will be necessary.
Messy but effective.
