How to build a 4' high retaining wall using cinder blocks?
My back yard slopes and I am looking to build about a four foot high retainig wall out of cinder blocks. I choose cinder blocks because I won't see the wall once I back fill it does anyone have a any advice?
Make sure you have a way for the wall to be tied back into the wall you are retaining. With landscaping blocks I have always used "snow fencing" perpendicular to the wall going back 3 feet and lay gravel in to tie it together. You sandwich the Snow fence in between the blocks. 2 layers of snowfence should work for 4 feet. Last layer gets covered with gravel then a top layer of dirt for plants or grass. Also don't forget about drainage. you may want to lay a drain tile behind the wall to carry the water from behind and around the wall.
Also I would use some re-bar vertically to tie the wall together as you cement the blocks in place. or pour sand or gravel in them to lock them in place.

Sleazy Mancini - High Wall
What kind of plants are good for hanging on a high wall that need low maintainence?
We have a 12 foot tall wall. We want to decorate it with some plants, vines, or whatever. We don't want leaves falling all the time or messiness.
Thanks all you green thumb types. I just install stuff.
Weed plants! Easy to take care of and looks beautiful

Hmm — interesting to me that you see beauty here, though I did select this frame with your stated desire for symmetry in mind!
Taken from the moving car on a main highway — the high wall is no doubt there in part to help deaden the sound of traffic as well as for privacy.
The white cross was a mystery to me when I took this, but after a chance conversation with my cousin who works for an aerial imaging company, I now believe it was a marker for an aerial photograph.
