How can I break a bike chain?
I just bought a new SRAM single speed chain from the local Trek store for my haro that I just finished restoring. I was able to break the original chain by pulling off the c-clip with a scratch awl, but the chain shattered after riding, so I had to replace it. Now this one is too long, and my scratch awl trick doesn't work, and I can't pull my axle back on my dropouts. My dremel is broken, so I can't grind down the pin, and the store is closed until noon tommorrow, but I need the bike before then. Is there any trick for breaking it?
If you have a center punch or a nail set, lay the links along a piece of wood (2x4 would be best), position the punch or nail set on the link pin, and hit it a few times with a hammer. It works best if you can drill a hole in the 2x4 first, and position the link pin directly over the hole. If you don't have either of those, you could try simply drilling into the link pin. Just make sure you use a hi-speed bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the pin hole.

Idea for scoring single speeds: Make it specific to a different category each week. Don't have an overall. Each race can be designated the single speed race for a given category, and scored separately within that race. i.e, one week is the 4B, the next the 4A, the next the 3, you get it.. and that way, if participation is low (as I suspect it would be in say, the P/1/2/3) you don't have to worry about it. Put it on the rider to tell the officials during check-in they're part of the single speed competition.
