Excellent observation Rick…I also remember the day when there were TONS of retailers at Sea Otter selling everything from bike parts to clothing to energy drinks. Over the past several years, this seems to have shifted…lots of companies showing product but not so many folks actually selling product anymore.
One of the biggest reasons I think this shift has occured is because Sea Otter is just too damn expensive for retailers to attend. With a tiny 10 x 10 at $1400 and all the expenses that go along with it (and let's face it, food and lodging aren't cheap in that neighborhood), it's just too cost prohibitive for many retailers to go anymore. You have to sell a lot of tee shirts to make up for what you paid to have a booth there.
Booth space needs to be reasonable…if it is, retailers will attend. I know people who got their small sole-proprietor companies off the ground by selling their wares at Sea Otter. Many of those same retailers (whose companies are larger now), won't attend Sea Otter anymore because it's too expensive. At the current booth space rates, it prices many of the little guys right out of the market. And I don't know about you, but one of the things that was cool about Sea Otter was being able to see the small start-up companies right next to the big guys.
People WANT to buy stuff at events like this. By making booth space more reasonable, it would open the event up to so many more retailers who could enhance the overall experience for Sea Otter spectators.
We (Haro Bicycles) have supported Sea Otter since it started (formerly with a factory pro team and now with a demo program); we always look forward to Sea Otter, but do I ever dread seeing what the new booth space rates are going to be each year when registration opens. It's just so costly…but we attend anyways because we feel like we get decent exposure for our brand there. However given the cost, each year we always wonder if our money might be better spent in another area.
