Pulling on handlebars?
I've seen some mention of "pulling on the handlebars" and even had a bike shop manager tell me about how compact gears came into favor for climbing during a race with a guy who was competing with a broken collarbone and "couldn't pull as hard on the handlebars." I've done some searching but I can't really find what this is about. My guess is that the pulling on the handlebars is a method to allow the bike it's natural sway to be lessened such (as horizontal movement indicates energy expenditure that is not in a forward motion, so loss of efficiency?).
Can anyone explain some? And also, links to websites detailing the technique would be preferred.
The technique of pulling on the handlebars is simply the application of Newton's third law of motion: for every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction, or in this case by pulling on the handlebars you can push harder on the pedals.
The reason it's so effective on a bike is because when you try to pedal with a lot of force you either push yourself back on your saddle or up in the air. By pulling on the handlebars, you don't slide back on your saddle or rise off the saddle, allowing more of your force to go into the pedals.
At a normal riding effort, pulling on the handlebars isn't necessary and can lead to the rider being squirrelly. But when going uphill, sprinting, or making a hard acceleration, this technique is very effective.
Examples:
Chris Hoy, start of 1km time trial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meTomy4M8dw -- can't see his whole body but can easily see how he pulls up as he starts.
Theo Bos, start of 1km time trial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qinn0hLsL_M -- can see how he pulls hard on the bars as he starts but once up to speed he doesn't much, other than maybe to keep himself from sliding back on the saddle.
As to the rest of your question, I'm not aware of guides to learn about pulling on the handlebars. With practice, it comes naturally. Simply it try out by using a bigger gear than normal, then focus on using your arms to hold your body from sliding back on saddle as you pedal hard. This often works best from the seated position with your hands on the top of the bars and fairly close together (a wide grasp on the bars when practicing this can cause you swerve a bit). You should feel that you're pulling backward with your hands.
