Many times all that it takes to get backstage tickets is a little creativity. When faced with the “sold out” status of the desired show, most people just give up and walk away – leaving ample opportunity for those of you who are more persistent or creative to jump in and hook yourself up.
One of the simplest ways to do this is by volunteering to work as stage crew for the event. While this method may require you to do some physical labor, there are several advantages of doing so toward the end of getting “in” with the people who can make things happen. Not only do you stand a good chance of getting to meet the stars at some point during the event, but you also stand to position yourself well so that you get called the next time an event comes to town. I can’t even begin to list the number of stars and awesome events I’ve scored doing this.
Another excellent avenue of getting backstage is by volunteering to do an interview with the band for your local media outlets. It is not uncommon for local media to hire freelancers to cover irregular events such as this; and, if you play your cards right by proving your value as a freelance journalist or photographer, you stand to get a media pass for every show that comes to your area.
If you cannot wrangle a way to get in to the show legitimately, it’s time to get creative about more subversive measures of doing so. This is where you might try to get a look at the guest list and attempt to convince the guards that you are on it, or linger around with an “in-group” of people who already have passes and try to slip on in, or even put on an old security shirt and attempt to walk right on through as if you have every right to be there. Who knows? With a little luck and a lot of guts, you might just succeed!
If you’ve been trying to get backstage passes for the upcoming show without success, you might consider looking into the myriad of alternative options available. Although none of these options will guarantee your access to the coveted backstage, they will certainly give you a higher chance of getting there than waiting around in hopes that passes will simply land in your lap.
If you are not indisposed to physical labor, the first avenue you should look in to is getting on the stage crew team for set-up and breakdown of the show. While doing this does not guarantee that you will get backstage, nor that you will even get to see the show while it’s going on, it does significantly increase your chances of catching the stars for a chat during their downtime. The downside of the media pass is that your allotted time is often limited – i.e. photographers are often kicked out of the primo position after the first couple of songs.
Last but not least, consider working the event. While it may not be entirely ideal to be bound to professional behavior when you’d really rather be partying, there is something to be said for getting paid to see the people whom you would have chocked up the money to see. The plus side of this option is that it gives you a viable excuse to arrive early and linger late, as well as make friends with all the right people who may be able to get you in.
With a little creativity, you may not even need backstage passes to get some one on one time with your favorite stars!
If your favorite show is coming to town and the thought of getting backstage is the most exciting thing you can contemplate, you should set about trying to win backstage passes as soon as possible – after all, everyone and their brother will be after those tickets, so the sooner you get on it, the better!
Start by scouring your local media for any contests or promotions they may be running. This can include everything from listening to the radio station at the right time and simply calling in, to constructing an elaborate essay about why you are the best person to give those tickets to. Due to the fact that every business sponsor wants to get as much bang for their buck as possible, there are many businesses who are amenable to this idea. Sometimes all it takes to win backstage passes is walking around for a few weeks in advance handing out fliers and drumming up a crowd for the event.
Of course, if you can’t win backstage passes, you can always work for them by volunteering as stage crew or as a freelance journalist for the show. Either way you go, all it takes to get backstage in most cases is a little creativity and confidence. Get really smart about it and you might just win passes for your friends too!
