How to buy a bicycle

Making the eco decision to ride is a big one and one that takes a lot of personal commitment - but it doesn't have to an overwhelming financial burden. In fact, a solid investment of a few hundred bucks can save you lots of dollars at the pump.

Here are some quick tips to get you started:

1. While it may be tempting to get a flashy BMX or a 50-speed mountaineer, a commuter's bike can be pretty basic with just a few simple options.

2. Bike frames come in 3 styles: Road Bike (the classic 10-speed), mountain bike or cruiser. The type you want will depend on your own individual riding style and the type of terrain you'll ride on. You can pick up a good one second hand by visiting your nearest bike shop.

3. If you're commuting in the city, consider a more lightweight frame, for toting up and down stairs as needed.

4. You will need a helmet. For commuting purposes, you don't need a high performance variety, a mid range one that fits will work fine. Consider a visor if riding into the sun. If riding at night, a reflective vest and LED blinkers are a must.

5. Other things that might come in handy include a water bottle cage and panniers (bags that mount to racks on your bike) for carrying extra clothes and work items. You will also need a bike lock, a standard U shaped one is probably best.

6. Once you have your gear, plan your route. Fellow cyclists are probably your best resource. There are many cycling communities online including the Cycling Promotion Fund and Bicycles Network Australia which can help you determine the best bike route to your destination.

7. Learn the rules if you're cycling on the road and ride defensively. Be considerate and use hand signals for your own safety and others.
