Frame Chrome
how do you remove chrome from a bike frame?
i have a bmx bike with sever rust but the chrome is not peeling.sandpaper doesn't work and i don't have access to a sandblaster.any suggestions.
Muriatic acid is the best way but do NOT do it yourself!
This type of question has been posted a couple of times lately, although the above answers explain how to remove the chrome, nobody touches on why it gets that way in the first place.
Chrome (or it's real name Chromium) does not rust! So why do you have a rusty chrome frame?
On lower end bikes, chrome is applied as a "flash" plating. This means that it is basically dunked in a plating tank for just a few minutes. This allows gaps between the chrome molecules and the metal UNDER it rusts making it look like the chrome is rusting.
When chrome peels it has lost its bond with the metal underneath due to rust (or dirt).
How do you avoid this? First, the item to be plated must be surgically clean. Then it has to have underplating of copper, then nickel, then finally the chrome. Very expensive, it is rarely done on bikes.
So, there you go- my attempt at raising the level of intelligence today.

I guess you girls are all alike! My wife hates dirt, too. Thank GOD for the snow, i say, when it covers up the '68 Chevy I got up on blocks out in the front yard. That and the washing machine just look like ordinary bushes almost, all covered up cozy like in a big white blanket. But you think love is like snow? I think love is like fire! I saw a girl at the beach one time in this little bitty thing she was wearing and it was hot out even before she showed up, but the more we fellas looked the hotter it got and when she left it wasn't sand there where she was lying it was glass. I swear. GLASS in the sand! Maybe snow needs dirt so it can fall on everything and make it all pretty, but I think love is only going to melt it away when it gets a mind to, like soon, come spring, when I get to see all that shiney chrome on the old '68 again!

I had the exact same pink tile in one of our last houses. It was also an early 60's brick ranch and I DID grow to love it!! I often wish we had never sold it. We had the same pink tile half way up the walls. A large white bathtub and luckily, a solid white tile floor. We had the ancient old medicine cabinet with lots of bright chrome and an old timey light over it. I replaced towel racks, toothbrush holders soap dishes and switch plates with matching shiny chrome and it looked great. What I really miss is the great oversized bathtub…..we didn't even have a shower in it and we, too, all had to share. For some crazy reason, it seemed to be easier to keep clean when we all shared and company had to use it, too! Kept a dustbuster mounted on the end of the cabinet and went through hundreds of lysol & windex wipes! lol
