How do I select the correct crank for a '79 Carlton Criterium bicycle?
I bought what I believe is a 1979 Carlton Criterium series bicycle frame online. The frame came with the original fork and bottom bracket, but it didn't include a crankset. It appears to be a square tapered style bottom bracket. I'm an experienced bike mechanic, but I haven't ever delt with anything like this before. Would the bb that came with the frame work with modern square taperd style cranks, or do I have to find a vintage part? Are there measurements that I should take that would help me select the correct bb? Thank you for your help.
I'm sorry, but I must not have made this clear enough for the first poster. I bought the bike without knowing what any of the original components were. It was just a frame, fork, and bb in the sale, nothing else. Also, I don't know which brand it is because there is no labeling anywhere on the bb. If it were that simple, I wouldn't have asked here.
You should be able to get something modern, but it might not be straight forward. It is most likely that you will have the common variety bottom bracket and all will go smoothly. There are traps for the unwary.
There are two main standards for square tapers, the European (ISO) and the Japanese (J.I.S) (most common). (Some Japanese track gear is European standard) They both have a 2 degree Taper (each side). From memory the European taper is slightly longer and comes to a slightly narrower end. They are really hard to tell apart unless they are side by side. (I can't remember the measurements
Either crank and spindle could be used together, But it throws the chain line out about 4-5mm (3/16") if you get it wrong. It is best to get it right.
Since the frame is about thirty years old it could be anything, it has probably been replaced. It might even be something obscure.
I would suggest you take the bottom bracket out for a service anyway. When you have it out, take it to your local bike shop and see if you can get a positive match. (should be a freebie) If it has seen better days or is something obscure it would be worth upgrading. Take your bearing cups also and ensure they are the common threads.
Your probably already aware that bb's come in different lengths for single, double and triple chain rings, but it is worth mentioning.
**** Edit I had a scratch though my odd bits and found a square spindle. I'm pretty sure it is J.I.S. Small end measures 1/2 inch (12.7mm).This sounds about right if I.S.O. is 12.5 mm.
So measure your spindle. If it is closer to 12.7mm get the J.I.S cranks. If it is closer to 12.5mm then get the I.S.O.
If it is something wildly different do yourself a favour and buy a new bottom bracket.
