Can someone identify this cactus?
I found a cactus in eastern Montana that looks like the stem of a Pineapple. From my recollection, it had many wide, saw-toothed blades. I imagine that this is a really hardy cactus to be able to survive the winter.
What is the name of this cactus, and do you think it could survive in Minnesota? If yes, would I need to create a sandy area for cacti to grow?
Hi there!
I am going to guess that if it 'looks like the stem of a pineapple' as you said, you probably have a Yucca or an Agave, neither of which is a cactus. Was this plant planted in someone's garden, or did you see it out on the open range or in nature? This would help tell what it was. Some Yuccas and Agaves will grow in Montana, but are not native to Montana.
They are great plants, though, and if you found it in Montana, then it will probably do okay in Minnesota, as long as the weather isn't too much wetter than the area it was found. The growing area you create for it doesn't have to be sandy, it just needs to drain quickly, and stay fairly dry, particularly in colder times of the year. This does NOT mean that it can't take being snowed on, however.
I live in zone 7, and many Yuccas and Agaves live here just fine, and it is below freezing for most of the winter.
