Do you really need a router to set up a wireless network for a PS3?
Well, I'm getting my PS3 on Wednesday, and I'm pretty cheap, so I'm not exactly overjoyed about buying a wireless router just to get a few demos. I noticed a feature on WinXP that allows you to set up a wireless network by saving the info onto a USB Drive and then sticking it in the other devices. Will this work for a PS3, or do I have to fork over the cash?
The information that XP can write to the USB drive is only for other Windows computers to use, it's not compatible with the PS3 or it's operating system.
It is also network configuration information only, copying that data to another computer does not create a network. A network still needs a physical router to handle traffic, and each device that connects to it needs to have a network adapter (wired or wireless).
If you already have broadband internet service, then all you need to get the PS3 online is a router, a wireless one if you don't want to have to run a cable to the router. You can find name brand wireless routers for around $25: http://www.google.com/products?q=wireless+router&hl=en&scoring=p .
Also, you aren't setting up internet access just to download demos. You will need the internet connection to upgrade the PS3 firmware (a necessary process) and also download patches for your games. You may also use the connection to download movies from the PSN or Netflix, or browse the internet.
