After steering master spy Bernard Samson through Faith and Hope, Len Deighton wraps up his trilogy with a predictable dose of Charity. Although the beleaguered spook has plenty of intrigue to deal with, this installment seems more diffuse and less plot-driven than its predecessors...
'I was raised in one of these things'
Ski Lake Placid, New York
Lake Placid, New York, site of the 1980 and 1932 Olympic Winter Games, is nestled in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, and a short distance from Albany, New York, Burlington, Vermont, and Montreal, Canada. Of all the places in the Adirondacks, Lake Placid is the most cosmopolitan. Here, you'll easily meet skiers from all over the world.
Whiteface Mountain is located 9 miles outside of the village and boasts the greatest vertical drop in the east at 3,430 feet. The highest lift served vertical is 3,166 feet. The difference requires a hike to "The Slides" which is rarely open and FOR TRUE EXPERT SKIERS ONLY! The mountain is steep. So if you're looking for those big easy going cruisers, you'll be very dis-appointed. But, if you want slopes that challenge you, this mountain is for you! After all, they don't call this an Olympic Training Center for nothing.
Especially nice for beginners is their East Acres Family Center. This area is dedicated to beginners and features the Bunny Hutch Triple, Carper Cruiser, and a great lodge to warm up and re-charge.
The parking is a bit convoluted though, with mini lots sprinkled around the mountain and a shuttle bus that picks up and drops off skiers parking in the remote lots.
The village has all you would expect with regard to accommodations, dining, and nightlife. For luxury accommodations, my recommendation is The Mirror Lake Inn. The Inn, overlooking Mirror Lake, has a very quant atmosphere, a spa to rejuvenate those tired muscles, a wonderful Bistro, and is a short walk from the heart of the action within the village.
On those days your not skiing, you can skate at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, take an elevator to a ski jump platform to see how high Olympic skiers jump, ride on the combination bobsled/luge track, or just chill out in town exploring the many shops, restaurants, and pubs.
