Crankset Bike I am switching to a 10 speed system on my bike. Will my old 8 spd Shimano 105 derailliers/crankset work?
I plan to purchase the new Nashbar 10 spd road shifter + chain but do not want too much 'expense creep' to kick in.
The derailleur will work, because all Shimano derailleurs use the same pull ratio. You *may* need to change the jockey pulleys, but that's cheap compared to the entire derailleur. The crankset may not work because the shifters will thrown the derailleur the wrong distance for the new chainring spacing. With only a double to worry about, though, it may still work. The only way to tell for sure would be to try it first.

upgrades for a old road bike?
i wanted to fix up an old 10 speed road bike and was thinking about buying new brake levers and shifters, old shifters are located on the stem. i have seen new bike with levers and shifters as one. is it possible to covert to the levers with shifters? is it possible to use the new brake/shifters on an old bike.? btw. the crankset i guess is a double and rear rim has 5 cassettes. It's been quite some time since i've tinker with bikes, and all i really know about are bmx bikes. i know what gears are for and when to use them but setting up my own bike is really new to me. And if i was to able to use the new shifters what would work for a old 10 speed bike? any help would be appreciated.
Peter let me say this about the bike you have, NO and Absolutely NOT. Five speed cassettes have gone the way of the dinosaur and you could not begin to upgrade this bike for less than you could go out and get a new one for. At a mimimum you would be spending around $500 or so to do it and that would be a bad idea for a bike that is probably not worth $100 or so. I personally would not give more than $75 for any 5 speed bike (1 cassette 5 gears) Just for a set of Tiagra STI shifters you would be looking at around $150 or so and lets say nothing of the new wheel set you need to accomodate a new cassette to handle a minimum of 8 speed or 9 speed ...Around $ 300 + and a new cassette, rear derailleur, front derailleur and crank very likely to keep up with that rear end, another $300 or so. Now do you think it is worth it still? Now lets not mention the cost of someone setting all this up for you too....Need I go on here?
