Crank Chainring
I have a triple/ISIS/truvative BB. I want to upgrade and go with a double chainring. How?
Do I simply purchase new crank and matching BB? My current BB says english 68/73 O-ring/no O-ring (or something like that). Will something like SRAM Red fit in my frame?
Yep....just buy the crank you want and the matching bottom bracket. You probably have a 118mm spindle on the one you have now, and the new one will be 113mm or maybe 108mm.....the crank will specify what it's designed for. If your new double uses the short 108mm-ish spindle, check to see that when it's all installed you won't have any clearance issues with the chainstay....usually not a problem.
Depending on which front derailleur you have, you might want to change it out to a double design, but yours may still work just fine. You should be able to crank down the low limit screw and get it adjusted properly for the new crank. Set it up and see....if you have chain-dropping issues or sluggish upshifting, then buy a new one.
Also, you may want a new front shifter, but that again depends on what you have. Most of the time you can still use your triple shifter on a double.
Most bottom brackets are able to be used on either 68mm or 73mm bb shells with spacers and/or o-rings that are included with the bb. Some are specific, though, so just be sure that the one you buy will work with your frame. Use a metric ruler to measure the outside edges of the shell.
Red will fit fine if you want to buy that, no worries. Also, just something to think about....you won't save a great deal of weight by switching to a double. You could always just remove the inner chainring, adjust the front derailleur, and call it good. It won't look as clean as a double, but it's cheap.

How to make your own single speed or fixie bike crank
STX triple cranks to single chainring?
i have an STX triple chainring (old i know, but it was cheap) that i want to convert to a single chainring due to some bent teeth from doing tricks (and not quite landing right). is it possible?
yes, it is possible, but you want to make sure that whatever you replace it with that you use spacers as needed (so it lines up to where it would have been when you were in the middle chainring) so it will still work with your rear deraileur
