Civilian Handle

What is it like being an Air Force engineer and officer? Would it be better to pursue a civilian career?
Also, what types of engineering would be best to study? I am also debating doing AFROTC. Is it worth it to do ROTC in college? Any input would be great, specifically about engineering in the Air Force and being an officer. I'm laid back and hippie-ish now but looking for structure in my life and a really worthwhile experience. Is the responsibility of being an officer too much to handle? Is it competetive getting into AFROTC or in the Air Force itself with an engineering degree?
i'm currently trying to get into the Air Force. I've graduated college with a BS in mechanical engineering. the Air Force is starving for engineers, so if you have your degree, they'll try to get you to go to OTC. If you do decide that you want to do the Air Force for a while, then definitely do ROTC. They'll force you to keep in shape, keep your grades up, and most importantly, pay for school (and pay you while your'e in school) after that you go to OTC, and then after that your tech school.
the pay is decent. with all the benefits and what not, it's only slightly less than what i'm making now as an engineer at a defense contractor. also the retirement benefits are freakin awesome. you will not find that at any private company. also keep in mind that the economy is going down the shitter. so even with an engineering degree, you're going to have a hard time finding a job in the private sector. my company is going through massive layoffs, which is one reason i'm thinking about joining the air force.
sorry i can't answer your questions about what it's like to be an officer, cause i haven't done it yet. but i'm quite sure that's the path i'm going to take. good luck!

armnews - Military, civilian police train to handle shooters
May I ask something along the lines of............ Military Respect...... [From a Civilian]?
As a Civilian. I address all of Our Soldiers as "Sir" or "Ma'am". As a gesture of respect. I recently had one of America's Best. Ask that I do not say "Sir" to him. Because he uses that Title for someone who is above him in Rank. Yet I only wish to show him, (and others) all of the respect that is certainly due.
To those who do & have Served. What's your thoughts on a Civilian. Giving you a show of respect?
Civilians: Do you always address our Military with `Sir' or `Ma'am`?
What's your opinon on how we should handle this situation?
A great question Buzz. Being called "sir" makes me uncomfortable. I was a Sergeant First Class (SFC) on my retirement. I had 3 different opportunities to become a commissioned officer but chose to remain in the enlisted ranks. I admire your desire to show respect to those who served and those who serve today, but respect is quite evident when it is there and just as evident when it is not. Just the way you conduct yourself and how you speak is more than sufficient to show that respect. I may be retired, but I was a soldier, I am a soldier and I will always be a soldier. And in my humble opinion Buzz, you would have made one hell of a soldier. God bless you. BTW, there seems to be a consensus of opinion here. God bless each and everyone here that served and are still serving.
