I want to change my chain wheel on my bmx bike from a 36t to a 25t do i need to buy any special parts?
I read somthing about a cog what does a cog do and do i need one.
A cog is a part that goes to a cassette hub, which you will probaly need to buy. Currently, you have a back hub that has a freewheel on it. These will only go down to 13 teeth, opposed to a cassette, which will go down to 8, and probaly lower if they made chains that could fit easy. Now you may be wondering what does a back hub have to do with me changing my front sproket? If you were to change the front to a smaller driver terrian, then it would be extremely easy to pedal, however you could probaly not get past 10 miles an hour, mabey less. Cutting 11 teeth off will make a huge difference, if i can easily feel it with 2 when i switched from a stock 25/9 gearing to a custom 23/9. Overall, you will need to buy a new front sproket obvisouly, and a new back hub which will be around.... say 150 give or take 50 in either direction depending on how much quality you want. Eastern makes cheap, but bad hubs. I know it sucks, but you may be better off buying a complte bike with that gearing. Either way, if your bike has this current gearing, its probaly a low end bike. Did you also check if you have a 3 piece crank? If you have a one piece, you need to buy new cranks as well probaly because a one piece crank has everything in well.. one piece. Thats another 100 bucks. Just remember one thing if your going to go through with this.... The closer together the number of teeth are, the easier it is to pedal.
