How do I get my back sprocket to catch on my BMX bike when I pedal?
I haven't ridden my BMX bike for a couple years now, and when I tried recently, the back sprocket didn't consistently work. Sometimes when I pedal it locks and I can actually get the bike going, other times the sprocket goes completely loose and doesn't do anything, leaving me pedaling to no avail. Is there a way I can repair this or am I going to have to buy a new sprocket/wheel?
You need a new freewheel.. the sprocket. The reason this is happening is that the guts of the freewheel are seized and ready to fail.
If you want to make it work, you can try this...
1) Lay the bike on it's side with the chain side up. Try to get the rear wheel as level as possible.
2) Slowly spin the rear wheel forward. While spinning,douse the freewheel heavily with WD 40. Eventually- within a minute or so- you should hear the freewheel start to 'click'.
3) Using a good grade of oil (not 3 in 1) run some oil into the workings. You should see a tiny gap between the sprocket and freewheel body... just add several drops.
This should get the thing working for awhile, until you can get to a shop to replace it. Note that depending on "how bad" the guts are, you might not get any use at all out of it.

Where is a good place to sell a 1982 BMX Redline bike other than Ebay or Criagslist?
I have my brother's 1982 BMX REdline bike (originally had red rubber tires). My son has outgrown it, and it seems to be something of a collectors item. Other than generic "check local antique stores" and "try Craigslist or Ebay", are there other options I don't know about? I would like to make what it's worth, but don't know if I can. It seems to be worth around $150 - 250. It sold new in 1982 for $295.

You could get a bmx with a smaller gear-ratio, that would make it easier to ride up hills. Something like a 25/9 would suit you. That means the front sprocket has around 25 teeth, and the rear hub has about 9 teeth. It's just a matter of asking the bike shop to fit you with the appropriate hubs and sprocket.
Where in Australia are you..?? I live in W.A., but if ur on the East Coast, try Strictlybmx or Backbonebmx online stores… they will help you out if you tell them you want a bmx with a smaller gearing.
