will waiting to replace the bearings in the headset of my bike make it more expensive?
i just bought a cheap old bmx, and the handle bar kinda rattles/jiggles foreward and back. i think that there is something wrong with the bearings. now the thing is, i just wanna ride it, butt will doing so make it more expensive to fix later (when it inevitably jams up and becomes un-rideable)?
sounds to me like the problem is just that the headset is just loose, akk you need to solve this problem is to loosen the stem bolts and tighten the bolt or allen that is on top of the stem ( not to much, just enough to stop jiggling but allow free spinning). Also, if the problem reappears after you fix it, the headset is most likely worn out, you can basically ride it till it dies without hurting anything except the bearings and the rest or your headset and cups. One that happens, a cheap new headset for the bike would probably be around $20.
A good point on obsolete parts. I’ve mentioned some of my used bikes in other posts here and dealing with old standards can be a real nightmare. My fixed gear is a Peugeot and it took me a year to find a decently priced bottom bracket (Velo Orange FTW!), and I only found it because it was newly made after my search started. My Schwinn uses their old 21.1 headset size, which I can’t find anywhere, though I’ve been told that BMX headsets are the same size, but I’ve not gotten around to trying one. It’s an interesting project IF you’re willing to search the web for hours and hour on end looking for that rare NOS part.

I can only give you information on the headsets you mention since your links are bad…you put parenthesis around the links.
First, an "aheadset" is a brand. This refers to a type of headset that uses a fork that has no threads on the fork steerer. Almost every bike you can think of now has a fork with a threadless steerer except for a couple that are sold in department stores.
An "aheadset" can be 3 different types- zero stack, integrated, or external. NONE OF THESE ARE INTERCHANGABLE. Integrated headsets (since you mentioned it) allow the bearings to mount directly inside the head tube of the frame without any races. The problem is that there are 10 or 15 different sizes of integrated headsets- and these are also not interchangable. In order to determine the correct headset you need to know the measurements of the inside of the head tube.
Zero stack headsets are similar to integrated versions except a race has to be pressed into the frame first. External headsets also use bearing cups that are pressed into the headtube and extend above and below the frame causing a "stack height".
The best thing to do is ask the seller of the frame for suggestions on which headset to use.
