bmx dirt jumping vs mountain bike dirt jumping?
I've been bmxing for 5 years or so. I ride mainly park and street but hit the dirt jumps once in a while. I want to get into mountain biking, at first I was thinking downhill but the nearest place to ride downhill is an hour drive away and with gas prices, I wouldn't go often. There's a lot of trails/freeriding in my area plus bmx tracks and dirt jumping parks/trails.
My question is, would I be able to go bigger on a mountain bike instead of a bmx when it comes to dirt jumping? Right now my bmx is setup for street, I ride a very small frame (20x13.5) so either way, I need a seperate setup for dirt whether it's a bmx or mountain bike. I'm also short at 5'6...not sure if that makes a difference.
Well it depends what your style is. If you're looking to go bigger it all depends on the bike. If you're shocks are too soft on a mountain bike, you wont be able to get the pop you want off the lip of the jump, but they're a little more forgiving. A BMX is good for jumps like step ups because there's no shocks. But they're less forgiving if you don't get the landing you want.
