What parts do BMX bikes have that EVERY other bike doesn't?


Hey. I just bought a new bike from someone and he saidit was a BMX bike, but it's kinda heavy and the frame structure's a little different, not much, but a little.

So I'm trying to find out what parts BMX bikes have that other bikes don't. My bike is a Rhino AirMaxx.

Please make a list of the parts it has and the things it can do from other bikes.

This is going to be a looong answer. To limit it I will assume you mean a stunt bike with a cost of around $400 to $700, not a BMX (racing) bike. Bikes under the $400 range really can't be considered TRUE stunt/BMX. Cheaper bikes, say under $300 will NOT have a lot of these features and should not be used for stunts or racing except for playing around in the neighborhood, or for practice...

1) Frame- has different geometry to allow high strength and low speed maneuvers. The differences in this might be slight but are significant. Stunt bike frames are never made of aluminum, and their dropouts are thicker to allow the abuse of grinding and tricks without bending. Frames are available in different lengths for different riders;

2) Rims- the hoops that hold the tires and tubes are generally aluminum but are double or triple wall. Aluminum rims are stiffer and stronger laterally than steel rims and tend not to bend as easily as steel;

3) Spokes- Generally made of stainless steel instead of hi tensile plated steel, these are much stronger but also stretch just a bit under stress which allow the wheels to take more abuse. The spoke nipples are usually brass instead of steel or aluminum which is also better for the whole wheel;

4) Hubs- the center of the wheel on stunt bikes are often very heavily built to take the stresses of stunts without breaking. Many stunt bikes use oversized 14mm axles as an additional safeguard;

5) Fork- Usually has heavier gauge tubing and internal or external reinforcements to handle bad landings and the stress of pegs;

6) Brakes- Usually U brakes. These aren't to stop fast, but are to be able to modulate speed and control. It is pretty hard to skid with U brakes;

7) Headset- The fork bearing assembly including cable detangler (Gyro) are made to have a minimum of friction for precision movement and high strength. Failure of this piece can mean severe injury to rider and bike, just as any other part;

8) Handlebars/stem- Again, made for strength and balance, not necessarily weight. A broken handlebar means a broken skull;

9) saddle seatpost- Must be solid. Used more for balance than for comfort, they are usually pretty unconfortable to sit on for any period of time;

Cost of BMX components in a 350-500 dollar bike?


I'm looking to purchase a new BMX bike. I have many bikes in the 350-500 dollar range in mind and was wondering how much it would be to purchase parts from different suppliers and build a bike. For bikes in that price range, about what would the bike components cost (as in entire bike minus frame)? Also if anyone has any good bikes or components lists that are in that price range too, feel free to post.

Building a custom bike cost WAY more. Some shops have parts packages, but usually of lesser quality than you'd get on a $500 Complete.
