stuck bars/gooseneck on an old 70's huffy bike?

the bars on an old bike i got from a scrapper truck are stuck, and i need them off. i know theres a bolt that u unscrew, i did that. However, the bars won't come off. i completely loosened all the other hardware above the head tube. I think it might be wedged into the fork tube.

Please help.
i want to do the entire job myself.
im only 14 my dad used to be a mechanic so i got tools, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

and a propane torch would make the metal expand, further tightening it, and would also destroy the paint and promote rust.

If you took that long bolt completely out you did it wrong.

Thread it back in part way, cover the head of the bolt with a piece of wood or something, and hit it with a hammer until the bolt drops onto the stem.

Pull the stem and handlebar out with a slight twisting motion.

FBI 2007 Gooseneck

Do harleys produce more torque because the people who ride them tend to be grossly overweight?

someone just compared a harley to a cummins diesel...
and a sport bike to a dodge viper...

how often do you see harleys out towing gooseneck trailers?

do they need all that torque because the people who ride them are all 500lb hossas?

I thought we already proved that Harleys don't really have torque either.

vtwin...If you are gonna be dragging a trailer behind your already slow, stiff harley, why not just drive a car? Sorry but to me that has very little to do with the sport of motorcycleing.

Lensman...just for you. http://s594.photobucket.com/albums/tt30/hankmacnasty/?action=view¤t=IMG_0053.jpg

HDrider....You do bring up a point, we may have won. The guys spouting the typical harley guy BS are mostly gone, maddog was like the last of the breed. The rest of you just have a totally diffrent philosophy and not blatent ignorance, and that makes for better debate. When I first came on here asking a question about sport touring bikes I got a heavy dose of the harley cult party line, and also some very helpful answers, it's pretty easy to sort through that stuff. But it's also true that harley itself puts out a heafty dose of BS, those bikes really are not very good bikes for the dollar and I feel giving some facts to a baby motorcycle enthusiast, might be helpful to some who aren't really that into just buying a status symbol but through just being new and only knowing what is advretised the heaviest think harleys are really all that.

  • You need a 6mm allen key wrench. You may also need a box end wrench of any size to gain leverage as the bolt may be pretty tight. If it's too tight to loosen with just the allen key, slip the box end of the other wrench over the end of the allen key and align the box end wrench so that it effectively lengthens the allen key. Turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen. If the bolt is rusty you may need some WD-40 from the garage. Once you've turned the bolt about 3 full turns, give a quick rap on top of the bolt to dislodge the quill. Readjust the alignment of the wheel to the bars and retighten the bolt as tight as you can by hand. Hold the front wheel between your knees and try to turn the bars. If they won't turn then the bolt is tight enough.
These instructions presume that you have an old-fashioned quill type stem with only one fastening bolt.
If you have what is called a threadless steerer setup, then…..
The top bolt on the "gooseneck" or stem will not be the clamping mechanism. There will be 2 bolts on the side, likely 4 or 5mm allen bolts.
Determine the size by trying to insert each of the 2 possible sizes and use the one that fits. Loose each bolt about 1 full turn counter-clockwise, realign the bars to the wheel and retighten to the same as it was before. Test using the same method as described above.
