For a science project, I want to try this. Bike pedal to car alternator to capacitor to dc inverter ?
This is obviouslly not time effective, but that doesn't matter for this case. I'm trying to go from human power to charging a cell phone for a proof of concept. Can I do bike -> car alternator -> capacitor -> power inverter -> cell phone charger?
Do capacitors charge like a battery would, by placing + and - terminals in the right place?
yes, a large cap will function as a very weak battery, and yes, you wire it as you would a battery. Make sure it is rated at 20 volts at least.
But you don't need the inverter, you can charge the cell phone directly from the alternator or the from the capacitor. All you need is a resistor. However, this would not provide the complicated charge current versus time that the charger provides.
Gar: good point. An alternator will put out current when the engine is idling at 800 RPM. The belt doubles the speed to 1600 RPM or 26 RPS.
Can you petal fast enough?
jason, try a bike generator. I think they put out AC, so you will need a bridge rectifier. Then a series resistor to charge the cell phone.

In queensland if a car sees a motor bike and still hits it can driver be charged?
2 Cars changed lanes into lane of bikerider
bike rider saw the cars change in front of him and the first car stopping
to avoid being hit by the second car bike rider goes into emergency lane
to avoid hitting first car second car goes into emergency lane also and collides with bike rider
car driver said he saw the bike rider in the emergency lane but still hit him
what can we charge the driver with?
bike is totalled and all riding gear is damaged
insurance has deemed bike rider at fault because he was in the emergency lane
as driver said he saw motor bike rider but the accident was the motor bike riders fault as he was in the emergency lane
I'd be very impressed if the car were able to see anything.
Punctuation is your friend.
I'm not sure anyone in your scenario is going to be charged with anything. I guess they could be charged with unsafe lane change, reckless driving, failure to yield.
