Bars Stem the quill stem on my bike is stuck - any tips how to get it out so i can swap stems?
i wanted to swap the bars and stem from another bike, so i am trying to remove the old one. it is a quill stem. i tried loosening it with the appropriate sized hex wrench, but literally cannot budge it and don't want to damage anything. any idea what the problem might be or how i can get it out? it's not that the stem is stuck in the head tube once it's loosened, but that i can't loosen it with the wrench in the first place.

In increasing strength, these are your options:
Ammonia < WD40 < Liquid Wrench < PB Blaster
Liquid Wrench will work in all but the worst cases. Invert your bike and stabilize it. Yank the front wheel out of the way. Stabilize the bike; it's best to let the LW do its job for 24hrs the first time, and you don't want your bike falling over in the process. Position a disposable pan or tub below the stem to collect any LW that may drip. If the bolt threads and wedge have been given a good soak, you should be able loosen the bolt now.
You may be able to remove the bolt, but the stem itself may be a whole other disaster. There's a good chance that the stem is frozen in the steerer tube as well. That's why I recommended a minimum 24hr soak initially. If you've got more time, soak it longer. You'll have a better chance at removing the stem if you allow more time. Hopefully you won't need to resort to the stronger concoctions such as PB Blaster.
If you are able to remove everything (and I hope you are), take the necessary steps to insure this doesn't happen again: Apply a liberal amount of grease to the bolt threads, the stem, and the wedge. And check the condition of the grease periodically (wet/salty conditions = one year. dry condtions = two yrs.)
